Remembering Dogs with Wings in your Will

With a bequest to Dogs with Wings, you can provide a very lasting legacy: support of future guide and assistance dogs and their users. A new life for someone - a life made more fulfilling through your generosity. Have you made a Will? Or if you have, is it still up-to-date?

In making a Will, usually the first priority is your family and special friends. While you are deciding where your money will go, we hope you will think about leaving a gift to Dogs with Wings.

As a registered charity that receives minimal government funding, we rely heavily on support from the public. Thanks to people's generosity, bequests are an extremely important source of the funds that enable future Albertans the chance to become mobile and independent with a Guide or Service Dog or to benefit from our other range of services.

Dogs with Wings subscribes to Imagine Canada's ethical fund raising guidelines, and as a federally registered charity our financial records are available through the Canada Revenue Agency's website. We are an income exempt charitable entity and a deductible gift recipient.

Someone will never forget you

By making a bequest to Dogs with Wings - that is leaving a gift or legacy in your Will - you can really make a difference. You are helping us to provide a range of services and training to improve the safety, quality of life and independence of Albertans with disabilities.

Your bequest, however big or small, is greatly valued and is a significant help in our future planning. Please let us know if you are considering leaving a bequest to Dogs with Wings and we will ensure you receive all the information you require to make this generous contribution.

There are many ways to create a charitable gift to Dogs with Wings Assistance Dog Society in your will. Below are some examples of different kinds of gifts you can create in your will:

1. You may leave all or part of the remainder (residue) of your estate: 'to pay or transfer ______ per cent of the residue of my Estate to Dogs with Wings Assistance Dog Society.'

2. You may leave a specific asset: 'If, at the time of my death, I am still the registered owner of [fill in the company name and number of shares here] common shares to pay and transfer such shares to Dogs with Wings Assistance Dog Society.' OR 'to pay or transfer the net proceeds of sale from my real property municipally known as [fill in property address here] to Dogs with Wings Assistance Dog Society'

3. You may leave a specific dollar amount: 'to pay or transfer the sum of _____ Dollars [$] to Dogs with Wings Assistance Dog Society.'

4. You may leave money to a person in a trust and leave the remainder to DWW after that person passes away (a testamentary trust): 'to keep invested the rest and residue of my estate and to pay the net income derived therefrom to or for my said husband, [full name] during his lifetime. Upon the death of my said husband to pay or transfer the remaining residue of my estate to Dogs with Wings Assistance Dog Society.'

5. You may leave money to DWW if one of the people you leave money to in your will dies before you (contingency beneficiary): 'If in the event [name of person] predeceases me, to pay or transfer that portion of my estate to which [name of person] would have been entitled if they had lived to Dogs with Wings Assistance Dog Society.'

You don't need to tell us if DWW is named in your will:

It is not necessary to notify DWW that you have included a bequest in your will. If you require more information, please contact us at 780.944.8011 and we will be glad to help you.

Contribute to the Endowment Fund

The Endowment Fund was established to ensure the continuity and longevity of Dogs with Wings. Gifts to the Dogs with Wings endowment fund are permanently endowed, which means the gift itself is never spent. It is the investment income that provides the ongoing support for the organization. Your gift will be timeless, supporting the charity that you care deeply about. With a gift of $10,000 or more, you will also have the ability to create a named fund as a tribute or memorial to a loved one or to add your personal signature to your legacy. The endowment fund is held by the Edmonton Community Foundation.

Memorial and Tribute Gifts

Donations can be made to Dogs with Wings in memory, or in honor, of a friend, co-worker or family member by sending a cheque directly to us, or by calling Irene at the office 780-944-8011 ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) When we receive your gift, a card is sent to the family of the person honored, recognizing you as a donor. You will be issued a charitable donation receipt for any donation of $10.00 or more.

Gifts, other than money

*Dogs with Wings is currently in need of auction items for our 4th Annual "Dogs with a Cause" Fundraising Gala on November 5th, 2011! Please contact us at (780) 944-8011 or stop by our office at the address below if you have items you wish to donate.*

Often, our special events have a fundraising component. Can you donate an item to be given as a raffle prize, or an auction item? Can you host or hold a fun company event and donate the proceeds?

Puppy Supplies - we are always in need of towels, newspapers, sheets, cleaning supplies, poop bags, etc!

Canadian Tire Money - this is a great activity for kids, or schools, to collect. We can use Canadian Tire Money for a variety of items like light bulbs, cleaning supplies, dog chew toys, bowls and beds. If you would like to donate your Canadian Tire Money, please either drop it off at the Training Centre or mail it to us at:

Puppy Sponsorship
Sponsoring a future service dog is a great way for a company or business to show its social consciousness and acceptance and understanding of people with physical disabilities. A sponsorship includes:

  • A framed photo of a future service dog to hang in your offices (a puppy in our program with a plaque that identifies your company as a sponsor)
  • The opportunity to name a puppy, one that you can follow throughout his training
  • Your corporate logo embroidered on a dog's training jacket worn throughout its training period. The training period is approximately two years.
  • An informative presentation by Dogs with Wings Assistance Dog Society for your staff with your puppy. We have attended staff BBQ's, short meetings, and even a walk through the offices to introduce the puppy to staff - lots of photo ops!
  • Regular updates on the puppy's progress and visits to your business when requested.
  • Your company linked on Dogs with Wings Assistance Dog Society web page - we will link our sponsors and friends, as requested
  • An article in Dogs with Wings newsletter The Canine Courier.
  • Invitations to our Graduation Events, and introduction as a major corporate sponsor

Participate in planned giving

Planned charitable gifts are often larger than the gifts provided annually to a favourite charity. They tend to come from the assets you have accumulated and might include cash, property, valuable possessions, investments (stocks, bonds, mutual funds) or life insurance. With the advice of a professional advisor, your careful gift planning can help you to continue your annual giving, create donations that last through time and save taxes!

Current Gifts can include cash, securities and property. Deferred gifts can include wills, life insurance, RRSP/RRIF's or residual gifts. Please, talk with your financial planner, your lawyer or the professionals at Edmonton Community Foundation to make sure that your interests and wishes are carried out.

Dogs with Wings Assistance Dog Society is registered charity #BN88867 7234.
